Cambelts & Timing Chains – Northfield

Your engine’s cambelt or timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshafts turning in perfect time, so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment. If a cambelt snaps or a timing chain stretches too far, the engine can stop running and, on many cars, suffer serious internal damage.

At Northfield Car Care Centre, we replace cambelts and timing chains on all makes and models, following manufacturer procedures and using original equipment quality parts.

Cambelt vs timing chain

Most engines use one or the other, and the maintenance each needs is quite different:

A cambelt is made from reinforced rubber and wears over time, so it must be replaced at set intervals based on mileage or age.

A timing chain is made from metal and lubricated by engine oil. It is designed to last much longer, but it can stretch and wear, particularly if oil changes are missed.

Some modern engines use a wet belt, which runs inside the engine in oil. We cover these separately on our wet belt page.

When a cambelt needs replacing

Cambelt replacement intervals are set by the manufacturer and vary widely from engine to engine, commonly somewhere between four and ten years. Whichever limit you reach first, mileage or age, is the one that counts, because rubber deteriorates with time even on a car that is rarely driven.

We use AutoData to confirm the correct interval for your car. If you have bought a used vehicle and there is no record of the cambelt being changed, we recommend having it replaced rather than taking the risk.

Warning signs of a worn cambelt

A cambelt often gives little or no warning before it fails, which is why sticking to the replacement interval matters so much. Signs that may point to a problem include:

  • A ticking or slapping noise from the front of the engine
  • A squealing sound when starting or accelerating
  • Difficulty starting or the engine misfiring
  • Oil leaking near the timing cover, as oil contamination weakens the belt

Signs of timing chain wear

Timing chains usually give more warning than belts. Look out for:

  • A rattling noise for a few seconds after a cold start
  • The engine management light coming on
  • Rough idling, hesitation, or a loss of power

If you notice a rattle on start-up, it is worth having it checked promptly. Our Snap-on and Autel diagnostic equipment allows us to read the timing data from your engine and assess whether the chain has stretched beyond its limits.

What the job includes

Depending on your engine, cambelt or timing chain replacement typically covers:

  • A new belt or chain, along with tensioners and idler pulleys or guides
  • A new water pump, where it is driven by the cambelt
  • Replacement sprockets or seals where the manufacturer specifies them
  • A final check of the engine timing and a test drive

We will confirm exactly what your car needs, and the full cost, before any work begins.
