Car Brakes - Northfield

If your brakes are squealing, grinding, or feel different when you press the pedal, they need checking as soon as possible. At Northfield Car Care Centre, we inspect and repair braking systems on all makes and models, including hybrid and electric vehicles, and we will always explain what we have found and confirm the price before replacing anything.

Brake warning signs to look and listen for

Brakes rarely fail without warning, as most problems announce themselves through a change in sound, feel, or a light on the dashboard.

 Noises when braking

  • A high-pitched squeal, which often comes from a wear indicator built into the brake pads to tell you they are getting low
  • A harsh grinding or scraping sound, which usually means the pads have worn down to the metal backing and are damaging the discs
  • A clicking or knocking noise, which can point to loose or worn components

Changes in how the car feels

  • Vibration through the brake pedal or steering wheel, often caused by discs that have worn unevenly
  • A soft or spongy pedal, which may indicate air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a leak
  • The car pulling to one side under braking, commonly caused by a sticking caliper
  • Longer stopping distances than you are used to

Warnings on the dashboard

A brake warning light can mean low fluid, worn pads on cars fitted with electronic sensors, or a fault with the parking brake. An ABS warning light indicates a problem with the anti-lock braking system, which our Snap-on and Autel diagnostic equipment can read and trace.

Brake pads, discs, calipers, and fluid

Brake pads and discs are the components drivers replace most often, as each time you brake, the pads press against the discs to slow the wheels, and both wear gradually as a result. Discs have a minimum thickness set by the manufacturer, and we measure them during every inspection to see whether they can be reused or need replacing alongside the pads.

Calipers hold the pads and push them against the discs, and over time, the pistons and slide pins inside a caliper can seize, particularly on cars that sit unused for long periods or are driven mostly on short journeys. A sticking caliper causes uneven wear and can make the brakes drag.

Brake fluid transfers the pressure from your foot to the calipers. It absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and can make the pedal feel less responsive during heavy braking. Many manufacturers recommend replacing it every two years, and we will advise on the correct interval for your car.

Braking on hybrid and electric cars

Hybrid and electric vehicles use regenerative braking, where the motor helps slow the car and recovers energy. As a result, the pads often last longer, but the discs can be prone to corrosion because the friction brakes are used less. We check for this during every inspection on these vehicles.

Brake work you can rely on

Your brakes are the most important safety system on your car, so you need to trust the people working on them, and as a family-run garage established in 1998, we pride ourselves on clear, honest advice. We will show you where parts are worn, explain what needs replacing now and what can wait, and call you before carrying out any additional work.

We fit original equipment quality parts covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, and we are the only RAC Approved Garage for miles around. We also offer the option of Payment Assist to our customers.
