Suspension – Northfield

Your car’s suspension keeps the tyres in contact with the road, absorbs bumps, and plays a key role in steering and braking. If your car feels bouncy, knocks over speed bumps, or pulls to one side, a suspension component may be worn.

At Northfield Car Care Centre, we inspect and repair suspension systems on all makes and models, including hybrid and electric vehicles, and we always confirm the price before carrying out any work.

Why choose us for suspension repairs

  • A thorough inspection to find the true source of the problem, rather than replacing parts on guesswork
  • Original equipment quality parts covered by the manufacturer’s warranty
  • A phone call to confirm pricing before any additional work is carried out
  • Four ramps across the workshop, giving us the space to inspect and repair your car efficiently
  • A family-run garage established in 1998, and the only RAC Approved Garage for miles around

 Parts of your suspension system

The suspension is made up of several components that work together, and a fault in one can affect the others. The main parts include:

  • Coil springs, which support the weight of the car
  • Shock absorbers, which control the movement of the springs and stop the car from bouncing
  • Wishbones and control arms, which connect the wheels to the car’s body
  • Bushes, the rubber mountings that reduce noise and vibration between components
  • Ball joints, which allow the wheels to move and steer smoothly
  • Anti-roll bar links, which help keep the car stable through corners
  • Top mounts, which secure the suspension to the body of the car

Why suspension components wear

Every bump, pothole, and speed hump puts strain on your suspension, and over time the components gradually lose their effectiveness. Wear is often sped up by:

  • Potholes and poorly maintained road surfaces
  • Frequently driving over speed bumps at speed
  • Corrosion, which can weaken coil springs until they crack or snap
  • Regularly carrying heavy loads or towing
  • The age of rubber bushes, which harden and split over time

Signs your suspension needs attention

Suspension wear tends to develop slowly, so the changes can be easy to miss. Symptoms to look out for include:

  • A knocking, clunking, or rattling noise when driving over bumps
  • The car continuing to bounce after going over a dip
  • The car pulling to one side, or the steering feeling vague
  • Uneven or unusually fast tyre wear
  • The car leaning heavily through corners or dipping at the front when braking
  • One corner of the car sitting lower than the others, which can indicate a broken spring
  • When suspension repairs are needed

Worn suspension affects more than ride comfort as it can increase stopping distances, reduce grip in wet conditions, and cause your tyres to wear out prematurely. Suspension is also checked during the MOT, and faults such as a broken spring or excessive play in a ball joint can result in failure.

If you notice any of the symptoms above, it is worth booking an inspection promptly. Catching a worn bush or link early is usually far cheaper than waiting until the wear has affected other components.

What suspension repair involves

Every repair starts with a thorough inspection on one of our ramps. Depending on what we find, the work may include:

  • A road test to reproduce and pinpoint the noise or handling issue
  • Inspecting each component for wear, play, leaks, and corrosion
  • Replacing worn parts, such as springs, shock absorbers, bushes, or links
  • Replacing shock absorbers and springs in pairs on the same axle, so the car stays balanced
  • A final road test to confirm the fault has been resolved

If the work affects your car’s wheel alignment, we will let you know whether an alignment check is recommended. We will explain our findings and confirm the full cost before any work begins.
