Turbo Cleaning – Northfield

Turbo cleaning removes the carbon deposits that build up inside a turbocharger and can lead to loss of power, limp mode, and warning lights. At Northfield Car Care Centre, we carry out professional turbo cleaning on most makes and models, and we diagnose the fault first so you know whether cleaning is likely to solve the problem before any work begins.

Cars most likely to need turbo cleaning

Carbon build-up can affect any turbocharged engine, but some cars are more prone to it than others. These include:

  • Diesel cars, particularly those with variable vane turbos
  • Vehicles used mainly for short journeys, where the engine rarely reaches full temperature
  • Cars that spend a lot of time in slow, stop-start traffic
  • Higher-mileage vehicles, where deposits have had longer to accumulate

Why turbos lose performance

Many turbochargers use a set of adjustable vanes to control boost pressure. Over time, soot and carbon from the engine collect around these vanes and the surrounding components, and eventually the vanes can stick. When this happens, the turbo can no longer deliver the right amount of boost, and the engine’s performance suffers.

Carbon build-up is often made worse by:

  • Frequent short trips that do not give deposits a chance to burn off
  • Driving at very low revs in high gears for long periods
  • Extended service intervals or the wrong grade of engine oil

Signs your turbo needs attention

Turbo problems usually show up as a change in how the car drives. Common symptoms include:

  • A noticeable loss of power, especially when accelerating or climbing hills
  • The car going into limp mode, with power restricted to protect the engine
  • The engine management light coming on
  • Hesitation or flat spots as the revs rise
  • Black smoke from the exhaust under acceleration
  • Poorer fuel economy than usual

Blue smoke, oil around the turbo, or a loud whining noise are more likely to indicate mechanical wear, which cleaning alone will not fix.

When turbo cleaning is the right option

Cleaning is most effective when the fault is caused by carbon rather than mechanical damage, and it can restore performance for a fraction of the cost of a replacement turbo. Several other faults can produce the same symptoms, though, so we use Snap-on and Autel diagnostic equipment to read fault codes and monitor live boost pressure. We also smoke test the intake and boost pipework, as a split hose or loose connection can trigger the same warnings as a sticking turbo.

What turbo cleaning involves

Once we have confirmed that cleaning is suitable, the process typically includes:

  • A full diagnostic check to establish the cause of the fault
  • Introducing a Forte professional cleaning treatment into the engine while it is running
  • Breaking down carbon deposits in the turbo and intake so they can be expelled through the exhaust
  • A road test to clear remaining residue
  • A final check of the live data to confirm the turbo is working correctly

We will explain our findings and confirm the full cost with you before any work begins.
